Royers Round Top Cafe
One sign of a really good eatery is that people begin to see it as a primary destination. Instead of stopping in for a quick bite while driving from one place to another, it becomes the focal point of a journey, sometimes the only reason for the trip. From the street, the café looks a little like a colorfully decorated 1950's gas station. I was greeted at the entrance by Bud Royer, also known as the "The Pie Man." In 1987, Bud and his wife Karen bought the café that was in business at this location and over time, turned it into a bustling family enterprise involving all of their children. The operation of the café is now in the capable hands of their daughter, Tara, and son, JB, giving Bud more time to devote to the mail order distribution of Royer's famous pies. Bud is a character, friendly and full of charm, who often coins phrases that have come to be known as "Bud-isms."
As I entered the cafe, the first thing I noticed was the long counter covered with freshly baked pies. The café has a cozy atmosphere with oldies but goodies 60's music playing in the background. Once seated, I began to study some of the hundreds of pieces of artwork and memorabilia covering the walls and ceiling. I was impressed by the many letters from people who enjoyed their dining experiences at the cafe. Obviously, the staff at Royers Café is passionate about pleasing their customers.
Their Sunday special, the 24-hour marinated, buttermilk and garlic, battered fried chicken, is a savory treat. It is served with mashed potato casserole and cream-corn that put the dish over the top. Their specialties include quail, rack of lamb, steaks, seafood, pasta dishes and everything in between. I'll be back again and again to try the many mouthwatering entrees and desserts on the menu.
I tried to save a little room for dessert and I was glad that I did. Unable to decide on just one piece of pie, I ordered the Pie Shots. "Pie Shots" consist of a shot of each of three pies, Bud's Chocolate Chip, Ann's Pecan and the Café's Buttermilk, all served with Amy's Ice Cream. It's no wonder that Royers pies are in demand nationwide. And now I know what all of the fuss is about.
